As many as six small shops near Baratang Jetty have been damaged after an old tree fell on them today. All six shops were small joints selling snacks and other eatables.

No one was seriously injured in the incident; however, one person sustained minor injuries.

According to sources, the locals have been requesting the forest department to remove all dangerous trees from the Forest land in the vicinity of the shops, but the department never bothered to take any action.

The locals also informed that two more dangerous trees in the area pose a risk to life and property.

Soon after the incident, Fire Service Personnel arrived at the accident site and assisted.

The damaged shops provided livelihood to several families since the last twenty years.

Department of Environment and Forest and other departments of A & N Administration should immediately act on all requests to remove dangerous trees, as in many cases dangerous trees were the cause for the loss of human life.
