Overloading of Vehicles, Carriage of Commercial Goods in Buses Prohibited; Violators to Face Strict Action

The authorities have reiterated that overloading of vehicles beyond permissible limits and the transportation of commercial or combustible goods in passenger buses, including sleeper coaches, are strictly prohibited under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

All commercial vehicle owners, operators and drivers have been informed that these directions are in accordance with guidelines issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. Any violation of the prescribed norms will invite stringent action from the enforcement agencies.

Officials stated that overloaded vehicles will be liable to penalties, detention, and mandatory offloading of excess load. In addition, permits of vehicles found violating the rules may be suspended or cancelled, and vehicle owners will be held accountable for such offences.

The vehicle owners and operators have been urged to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and permit conditions in the interest of passenger safety and to ensure the safety of other road users. The Administration has emphasized that compliance with these norms is essential to prevent accidents and ensure safe public transportation across the Union Territory.
