Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship apprehended a Myanmarese boat and detained one poacher near Landfall Island on February 7. The authorities seized approximately 400 kg of sea cucumbers, a protected marine species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The swift action by the Indian Coast Guard reflects its unwavering commitment to combating illegal poaching and safeguarding the fragile marine biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This operation is part of the regular effort to protect endangered species in these ecologically sensitive islands.
Illegal poaching of marine species by foreign poachers, particularly sea cucumbers, is a growing concern in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Sea cucumbers play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. However, they are highly sought after in the international market, especially in Southeast Asia, for their culinary and medicinal value. This demand has led to rampant foreign poaching in these waters, threatening marine biodiversity and the ecological balance of the region.
Landfall Island, located at the northernmost tip of the Andaman Islands, is prone to illegal poaching activities due to its proximity to international waters. It is part of the North and Middle Andaman district and lies close to Myanmar, making it vulnerable to intrusions by foreign poachers. The water around the island is home to rich marine life and pristine coral reefs.
