Residents of Nancowry and Great Nicobar Eagerly Waiting for Passenger Ship Sailing

Port Blair, Nov 9 2020

The residents of Southern Group of Islands especially Nancowry and Great Nicobar are demanding a ship from Port Blair before Diwali so that their relatives can reach their respective homes for the festival.

Further the Govt. Servants posted in these Islands are waiting eagerly to visit their homes in South Andaman and North & Middle Andaman District. Taking to Nicobar Times one Govt. Servant posted in Nancowry has demanded a ship as early as possible since many of the employees of Govt. Department have not seen their families from the last 5-6 months. It’s festival time and everyone is waiting to depart for home. He further added that the last passenger ship from Nancowry departed on 30th of October 2020 and the priority for travel in that ship were given to students and the Govt. Servants who have been permanently transferred from the Islands.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought several issues for the Islanders living in these far flung Islands and one of them is non-availability of frequent passenger ships for travel.

Several residents of these southern group of Islands also reside in Port Blair and elsewhere in India and visit their homes during the festivals, once in a year. Passenger ship facilities should be made available for those intending to travel to their homes for the festival season ahead.

The residents of these Islands and the intending travellers should also take responsibility and should exhibit responsibility and follow all COVID-19 norms properly. The mandatory quarantine period as prescribed by the Administration should also be completed post travel for the safety of their family, friends and the community at large.
