Self Help Group Mela-2025 Showcases Women’s Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in Calicut

The Gram Panchayat Calicut, in collaboration with Panchayat Samiti, Prothrapur, successfully hosted the Self Help Group (SHG) Mela-2025 on March 23 and 24, 2025. The two-day event, held under the inspiring theme “Empower. Create. Celebrate,” provided a vibrant platform to showcase the remarkable talent and entrepreneurial spirit of SHG women from the region.

The Mela drew an overwhelming response from the community, with a diverse array of stalls displaying handcrafted products, traditional crafts, and culinary delights — all meticulously prepared by SHG members. The event highlighted the ingenuity and skill of these women, fostering economic independence and empowering them to thrive as entrepreneurs.

The closing ceremony was graced by Ms. Smitha R, IAS, Secretary (Power), as the chief guest. She lauded the efforts of the SHG women and acknowledged the Mela’s role in promoting their economic self-reliance. Ms. Smitha also reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting such initiatives that contribute to the overall development of the community.

The inaugural ceremony was equally distinguished, with Ms. Sapna Priya, Director, RD, PRIs & ULBs, presiding as the chief guest. She commended Gram Panchayat Calicut and Panchayat Samiti, Prothrapur, for their initiative in organizing such a significant event. Ms. Sapna emphasized the importance of empowering women through such platforms and highlighted the immense potential of SHGs in driving rural development.

Beyond the exhibition stalls, the Mela featured captivating cultural performances by villagers and children, adding a festive and celebratory atmosphere to the event. These performances showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region and provided wholesome entertainment for attendees of all ages.

The Self Help Group Mela-2025 was more than just an exhibition — it was a testament to the resilience, creativity, and determination of the SHG women of GP Calicut.
