One long chassis State Transport Service Bus today skidded off the road on State Highway-2 in Great Nicobar Island after its spring leaf broke due to the horrible condition of the road.
The minor accident took place near the 22 Km Mark on North-South Road when the bus was on its scheduled trip from Shastri Nagar to Campbell Bay. No passenger or staff was injured in the minor accident and the bus was recovered immediately with the help of a truck.
State Highway-2 in Great Nicobar Island is in a deplorable state. The road has not been repaired for a long period of time. There are tens of thousands of small and large potholes in the entire 35 Km stretch of State Highway-2.
Andaman Public Works Department had filled up potholes in some stretches of the road recently, but the road still needs major repair work.
APWD has called tenders for the proper repair of some stretches of the road and the department is also in process of calling for tenders for the repair of other stretches of the road.
The general public of Great Nicobar has been complaining about the deplorable condition of the road for a long time. The political leaders have also time and again brought up the issue of the bad condition of State Highway-2 before the senior officials of the administration.
The entire stretch of road from Zero Point in Campbell Bay to Shastri Nagar needs to be repaired immediately to avoid any major accidents.
The deplorable condition of the State Highway-2 is also responsible for the poor condition of most of the STS Buses in Great Nicobar.
