Vivekananda Mela Inaugurated at Shaheed Dweep as Part of World Youth Day 2026 Celebrations

The weeklong Vivekananda Mela, organized as part of the World Youth Day 2026 celebrations, commenced with great enthusiasm and fervour at Shaheed Dweep on January 12, commemorating the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and underscoring the vital role of youth in nation-building.

The inaugural programme was graced by the Chief Engineer, Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), Sri Vijaya Puram, Mr. Prejith Rekh, as the chief guest. The event was attended by the Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Shaheed Dweep, the Pramukh of Sri Vijaya Puram Panchayat Samiti, Prothrapur, PRI members, senior officers and officials of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, besides a large gathering of local residents and tourists.

As part of the mela, various departments of the A&N Administration set up stalls showcasing their schemes, services and achievements, aimed at creating public awareness and facilitating outreach. The event also saw active participation from tourists, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the celebrations.

Cultural performances by school students emerged as a major attraction of the programme. The students presented patriotic songs, dances and skits inspired by the ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda, earning wide appreciation from the audience.

Addressing the gathering, the chief guest highlighted the significant developmental works undertaken by the APWD in Shaheed Dweep, which have led to improved infrastructure and enhanced the quality of life for the island’s residents. He emphasized the importance of active youth participation in sustaining development while preserving the unique cultural and natural heritage of the islands.

The inaugural day of the Vivekananda Mela concluded with a collective resolve to empower the youth, promote inclusive development and uphold the timeless values of Swami Vivekananda in building a progressive and vibrant society.
